LEARN-TO-SWIM PROGRAM

The Berkley Schools’ Learn-to-Swim program promotes water safety and life-long aquatic exercise through individualized, developmentally appropriate instruction while emphasizing skill acquisition in balance with a sincere respect for an aquatic environment. Prerequisites necessary for registration are listed in the descriptions below. Learn more and sign up for classes at the bottom of the page.
Note: The Berkley High School pool is closed due to Phase 2 Bond Construction during the 2017 Summer months.

American Red Cross Courses

Parent/Tot Aquatics

6 months- 3 years old
Parent/aunt/uncle/grandma/grandpa in water with the child in a diaper and swim pants. No prior skills required. Adults must be very comfortable in the water.

Preschool 1

3-5 years old
No prior skills required.

Preschool 2

3-5 years old
Child must be able to enter pool independently using steps, ladders or side, submerge to mouth, roll back to front, glide 2 body lengths, float for 3 seconds and blow bubbles for 3 seconds.

Preschool 3

3-5 years old
Child must front glide for 2 body lengths, roll to back and float for 15 seconds, move to vertical, front swim using a combined arm/leg action for 3 body lengths, roll on back and float for 15 seconds then roll to front swimming for 3 body lengths.

Level 1

6 years & older
No prior skills required.

Level 2

6 years & older
Child must have earned a Level 2 recommendation on last report card to enroll, or enter independently, travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times, then safely exit the water, front glide for 2 body lengths, roll to back and float for 5 seconds and move to a vertical position.

Level 3

6 years & older
Child must have earned a Level 3 recommendation on last report card to enroll, or child must be able to step from side in chest deep water, move to front float or treading position for 15 seconds, swim on front and/or back for 5 body lengths, move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position, push off and swim using a combined arm and leg action on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back and float for 15 seconds, roll to front then continue swimming for at least 5 body lengths.

Level 4

6 years & older
Child must have earned a Level 4 recommendation on last report card to enroll, or must be able to jump into deep water (over head) from the side, swim front crawl for 25 yards, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards.

Level 5

6 years & older
Child must have earned a Level 5 recommendation on last report card to enroll, or must perform a feet-first entry into deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Child shall be able to swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim backstroke for 15 yards. Child shall submerge and swim a distance of 3 to 5 body lengths underwater without hyperventilating, return to the surface, then exit the water.

Level 6

6 years & older
Child must have earned a Level 6 recommendation on last report card to enroll, or must perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim elementary backstroke for 50 yards, using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout. Child shall swim breaststroke for 25 yards, change direction and position of travel as necessary and swim backstroke for 25 yards, using appropriate and efficient turning styles throughout.

Non-Red Cross Courses

These classes are advanced swim team preparation courses developed for swimmers not yet ready for a competitive swim team, but interested in preparing for one.

Level 7

8 years & older; stroke prep
Child must have earned a Level 7 recommendation on his/her last report card, or must dive from diving board in a tuck or pike position, swim continuously with a combination of strokes for 300 yards: freestyle for 75 yards, under water 15 yards, backstroke for 50 yards, breaststroke for 50 yards, sidestroke for 50 yards, and butterfly for 50 yards. Child must perform a freestyle & backstroke flip turn and be able to tread water for 5 minutes.

Level 8

8 years & older; team prep
Child must have earned a Level 8 recommendation on his/her last report card or must demonstrate the ability to perform backstroke, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke for 25 yards each. For swimmers 8 years or older interested in joining a swim team. Develop techniques of the four competitive swim strokes, starts and flip turns while building endurance. Swimmers must be able to tread water and swim predominately in deep water (12 feet).
